A CNN Greece journalist was attacked after witnessing a group of locals abusing a migrant whom they had chased and apprehended. In a post by a local newspaper editor in the Evros region widely circulated on social media there are further reports of intimidation against journalists by local self-declared militias, as well as silencing of critical newspaper reports.
Concerns are beginning to be raised about the operation of civilian patrols in the border region, who appear in their social media posts and in media reports armed with shotguns and hunting rifles guarding the river crossings.
