The disarray among Greece’s opposition parties, which was underlined again this weekend, is providing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his government with vital breathing space despite its recent difficulties and is creating considerable doubt about whether a genuine alternative to New Democracy will emerge until the next national elections.

New Left, the group formed by 11 MPs who broke away from SYRIZA during Stefanos Kasselakis’s short-lived leadership of the leftist party, has rejected the idea of returning to its former political home.
